Taking place in various time periods, its tricky structure more garbled than intriguing, this is another recent Egoyan joint that's basically a trashy potboiler treated with a seriousness that only makes it all both leaden and silly. Lauded throughout the 1990s, Egoyan has been on a downward spiral ever since. Glenn Kenny was the chief film critic of Premiere magazine for almost half of its existence. But Egoyan keeps all the temporal balls he’s juggling aloft and plainly visible, so the porous borders between Veronica’s perception and a reality that deviated from that perception by a tiny but crucial degree are painfully known to the viewer. A codicil of Canadian law enabled her to avoid trial, plead guilty, and request the maximum sentence. Coming Soon. Until that movie, he seemed perfectly willing and able to move towards the mainstream with skill. “Why didn’t he tell me any of this?” a character wails at one point. Dense, intelligent storytelling, with considerable technical mastery, prefect mis-en-scene. All rights reserved. But eventually, sadly, Egoyan nullifies all narrative possibilities with a silly and cumbersome plotline about an accidental house-fire and a childhood grudge.
Guest Of Honour, [Egoyan's] latest effort, is decidedly that sort of low-wattage Egoyan classic, serving up familiar preoccupations and structural curlicues-minus any inspiration. Verónica recounts the torments, and secrets that marked her relationship with her father, which would not be resolved until the end of the movie [Full Review in Spanish]. Guest of Honour is poorly executed, appallingly written, shows no skill whatsoever. Robb Recommends: A Sangiovese Bottled in 2012 Is Finally Available. The wholesome-looking Veronica, it turns out, is only recently out of prison, having served time for improper conduct with her devoted 17-year-old student Clive (Alexandre Bourgeois).
